We return to Kenya after a break of several years to enjoy the superb wildlife adventures that that this wonderful country has to offer. Our tour will take us to Elsamere at Naivasha to enjoy the excellent facilities, see a profusion of wildlife, and see at first hand the important work of the Field Study Centre, set up by Joy Adamson for the education of children in East Africa in the important work of conserving their environment

 

Another feature is Joy’s camp in Shaba National Reserve, a lovely small private camp on the site of Joy Adamson’s original camp and an excellent area for elephant, buffalo and many other species, and marvellous bird-watching

.

The third visit will be to Lake Turkana to stay at Oasis Lodge, by the lake-side town of Loyangalani, scene of John Le Carre’s ‘the Constant Gardener’.   Here you can bathe in hot springs, enjoy magnificent panoramic views of the lake, and take excursions on the lake and to Mount Kulal.

 

All this and the luxury of the Norfolk Hotel at Nairobi, and a final stay at the Mount Kenya Safari Club will make this an unforgettable trip to this lovely country.

The Itinerary

 

Friday November 5th

Assemble at London Heathrow to take an evening flight to Nairobi.

 

Overnight: In Flight

 Saturday November 6th

Arrive Nairobi, and transfer to the Norfolk Hotel.  Check in and enjoy the rest of the day relaxing in this excellent hotel. There will be an optional visit to Daphne Sheldrick’s Elephant Orphanage in the Nairobi National Park in the afternoon.

Get together dinner tonight in the hotel.

 

Overnight: Norfolk Hotel, Nairobi.

Sunday November 7th, Monday November 8th & Tuesday November 9th

Fly by charter to Naivasha to ‘Elsamere’ on the shores of Lake Naivasha, former home of the Adamsons, for a 3 night stay.  

 

At Elsamere there will be a boat trip to Crescent Island, a visit to Hell’s Gate National Park, a visit to the Field Study Centre, and other safari drives to see more wildlife and the unsurpassed birdlife. A visit to see an estate where flowers are grown can be included.

 

Overnights: Elsamere Lodge, Naivasha

Wednesday November 10th. Thursday November 11th and Friday November 12th

 Drive or fly north to Shaba for a 3 night stay at Joy’s Camp.

Set in the heart of ‘Born Free’ Country, with views of Mount Kenya, Joy’s Camp overlooks a marshland area where large herds of buffalo and elephant can be observed from the camp. The days will be spent observing the game and birdlife on drives and from the camp, whilst enjoying luxury tents and excellent food.

Saturday November 13th Sunday November 14th & Monday November 15th

 

Fly by charter plane to Kalacha for a 3-night stay at Oasis Camp on Lake Turkana.

Lake Turkana, formerly Lake Rudolf, lies in a great wilderness area north of the equator and is one of the Rift Valley's largest lakes. It is a long narrow inland sea often referred to as The jade sea – as named by the title of a book by John Hillary. The lake stretches from Kenya's border with Ethiopia in the north to the Suguta valley in the south and measures over 250kms in length.  At 6405 square-kilometres It is the largest desert lake in the world. It is fed by Ethiopian's Omo River in the north and the Turkana and Kerio Rivers in the south; it has no outlet and it is alkaline.   The lake shores are poplulated by The Turkana people who lead a semi-nomadic existence, and the country's numerically smallest tribe, the El Molo who live a hunter-gatherer existence on the lake shores and islands

 It is host to the world’s largest crocodile population, Central Island is designated as a National Park to protect the breeding ground of some of the biggest crocodiles to be found anywhere.   Also to be seen here are hippo, giant Nile perch and many bird species.  Boat excursions are available to the nearby archaeological excavation site of Koobi Fora, "the cradle of mankind" and to South Island National Park,home to breeding colonies of crocodiles, hippos and migrant waterfowl.

There will be a drive to Mount Kulal, a UNESCO biosphere reserve, to see the unique forested slopes, the profusion of bird life and the amazing view over Lake Turkana

Tuesday November 16th & Wednesday November 17th

 

Fly by charter to the Mount Kenya Safari Club.  Enjoy a 2-night stay here in the magnificent surroundings of the famous Club.

 

High on the slopes of Africa's second highest mountain, the Fairmont Mount Kenya Safari Club straddles the equator in a glory of luxurious cottages and elegant buildings set amid manicured lawns and decorative ponds. There are many recreational activities available including horseback riding, golf, croquet, a bowling green, table tennis, swimming, a beauty salon, an animal orphanage and much more.

Thursday November 18th

 

Return to Nairobi for a final night at the Norfolk Hotel.

Farewell dinner tonight.

Friday November 19th

 

Transfer in the morning for the return flight to London Arrive London Heathrow in the early evening.
