Hidcote Manor Garden
This 10 acre garden is a fine example of the Arts and Crafts movement and remains one of the most influential gardens in England. Major Lawrence Johnston, an American explorer, created the garden in the early part of the 20th century high in the Cotswolds. With its series of "outdoor rooms", high hedges and exotic planting Hidcote Manor Garden is an inspirational garden. Donated in 1948 to the National Trust, who have maintained it since, it is always impeccably maintained but inevitably with the passage of time some plantings have been lost and Johnston's original planting legacy eroded. Now an anonymous donor(s) has promised the National Trust £1.6 Million to allow it to restore the gardens to its 1930s heyday. A matching sum has to be raised by the National Trust. The Trust has said it is confident it can do so and if that is the case this great garden will enjoy a new lease of life and will continue to be an inspiration for future gardeners.
