France has long been a favoured destination for travellers from the UK and in recent years the South West region has become one of the most popular parts of the country to visit. With its mix of picture postcard villages, breathtaking scenery, historic cities and rich and beautiful countryside it is not difficult to understand why.
Our tour starts in the medieval walled city of Carcassonne, a UNESCO world heritage site, where there will be time to explore. Travelling north we pass through the picturesque Minervois region en route to Millau, where the impressive Millau Viaduct spans the river Tarn. Designed by the architect Norman Foster this mighty structure is the tallest road bridge in the world and is now a well established tourist attraction in its own right.
The tour continues into the heart of the Dordogne region, finishing in the unspoilt town of Sarlat, capital of “Black Perigord”. Here there will be a chance to explore the weekly market where local agricultural produce is sold, including the highly prized black truffle for which this region is well known.
The tour concludes in Bordeaux, the wine capital of France, where there will be a visit to a Grand Cru vineyard and the pretty wine village of St Emilion.
Our tour also includes an interesting blend of agricultural visits including an olive oil factory, a sheep farm producing milk for Roquefort cheese and a “truffiere”, a farm where truffles are grown and harvested.
